Framed by the Pitons

One of the most spectacular sights in the Caribbean is two striking cone-shaped mountains, the Gros and Petit Pitons, rising 2500 feet above the sea on the southwestern coast of St. Lucia near the town of Soufrière. The stretch of land between the peaks called Jalousie Plantation, formerly a working sugar mill, is a natural spot for a luxury resort. Although it has only been open two years, Jalousie-Hilton Resort & Spa is now the finest hotel on the island and one of the best in the West Indies.

The resort is spread over 325 tropical acres and fronts a secluded beach. Accommodations include 115 private one-bedroom cottages, suites and Sugar Mill rooms, all designed for maximum privacy. Rooms are luxurious, many have their own plunge pools and verandahs. Every structure from the Colonial-style Jacquot Greathouse, the hub of the hotel, to the row of boutiques was designed to blend with the jungle-like environment. Facilities are widely spaced, but a fleet of shuttles circles the grounds regularly to transport guests. For one all-inclusive price Jalousie offers just about everything–unlimited food in four restaurants, all alcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, a variety of water sports, squash and tennis (clinics, too), use of the spa, airport transfers, taxes and gratuities.

Every visitor receives some free spa treatments depending on the length of their stay. In addition, spa packages are available. About 30 different beauty treatments are available from an able and well- trained staff. Guests interviewed at the spa were all very enthusiastic about the masseuses and masseurs.

Other staff members were also cited for excelling at their tasks. Nancy and Roy Myers of Cinnamonson, New Jersey, both with high-powered jobs, she in construction, he in nursing home management, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary at Jalousie and said, "The hotel is just so hospitable. People are warm, courteous, have a genuine feel for hospitality and a desire to please." In fact "Desire to Please" is one of the hotel services.
